久々にキップ・ハンラハンを聴く。「all roads are made of the flesh／Kip Hanrahan」(american clave)。95年、全7曲45分。
欧州ツアーとNY吹き込みのコンパイル盤。冒頭曲は、ジェリー・ロール・モートン作曲の「Buddy Bolden's Blues」。ジャック・ブルースのヴォーカル、アラン・トゥーサンのピアノ、ドン・プーレンのオルガン、チャールズ・ネヴィルのテナーサックスというシンプルな編成で、リラックスしたブルースを聴かせてくれる。
ギターの印象的なリフから始まる②「...at the same time as the subway train was pulling out of the station...」は、プーレンのピアノが絡んでくる瞬間が気持ちいい。③「The First and Last to Love Me(4,December)」は、カーメン・ランディのヴォーカルとディノ・サルーシのバンドネオンが絡み合う。中盤の気合のこもったアルトサックスは、ウォルフガング・プシュニック。
④「the September down shows itself to Elizabeth and her lover on East 18th Street in Manhattan」で、ジャック・ブルースが何度も何度も繰り返す歌詞から、アルバムタイトルは取られている。⑤「the same down,at almost the exact same moment,actually smiles at Don in Passaic」は、プーレンのピアノがとりわけ鮮やかだ。
⑥「within an hour, in New Orleans,Charles knows the lights in the room without even opening his eyes」は、プーレンの短いピアノソロ(タイトルは長いのに)。⑦「The First and Last to Love Me(2,October)」は、プーレンの盟友だったジョージ・アダムスが無伴奏テナーソロを聴かせる。
なお、④⑥吹き込みの半年後、この作品の米国内リリース直前、プーレンは帰らぬ人となる。アルバムは『音楽だけでなく光も放出する』プーレンに捧げられている。
